At the time the building was being erected, the builders of New York were in a fierce competition to build the tallest skyscraper in the world. Perhaps check out NYC Mayor for more information. The Chrysler Building was built at an average of 4 plants per week and no workers died during construction. Just before completion, the building stood even with the building 40 Wall Street, by H. Craig Severance. The latter subsequently added 61 centimeters to his building and claimed the title of world’s tallest building (this distinction excluded structures such as the Eiffel Tower). Van Alen, previously, had secretly obtained permission to build a needle, which was built within the building. The Nirosta stainless steel needle was placed at the top of the building one afternoon in November 1929, making the Chrysler Building not only the tallest building in the world but also the tallest structure, surpassing the Eiffel Tower. The building opened its doors on 27 May 1930.Van Alen and Chrysler enjoyed this distinction for less than a year, until he was surrendered to the Empire State Building. Unfortunately Van Alen’s satisfaction was muted by Walter Chrysler’s refusal to pay his fee. The building was renovated in 1978 and 1979, during which the hall was covered with granite, marble and steel. The needle underwent a restoration that was completed in 1995. The building was bought by Alex DiLorenzo. DiLorenzo sold a life insurance company in Massachusetts, and later was sold to Jack Kent Cooke, a Canadian-American investor. The building, at the moment, is co-owned by TMW Real Estate, with 75 ownership, and Tishman Speyer Properties, with the remaining 25 . Detail of the roof of the building.
